The decline, documented during the first quarter of 2026, highlights the profound impact of the national livestock phase-out program and a structural shift in the European agricultural landscape.
According to figures released by the RVO (Dutch Pig Producers' Association) and analyzed by DCA Market Intelligence, approximately 3.73 million pigs were slaughtered in the first 14 weeks of 2026. This represents a 7.4% decrease—roughly 300,000 animals—compared to the same period last year.
The primary driver of this contraction is the continued reduction of the national pig population. In 2025, for the first time in 45 years, the Dutch herd fell below the 10-million-animal threshold. Since 2022, the population has decreased by 17%, reflecting the effectiveness (and the industry pressure) of the government's environmental buyout schemes.
In previous years, Dutch slaughterhouses managed to maintain high operational volumes by processing livestock that was originally intended for export to neighboring markets, such as Germany. Recent data indicates that this "export buffer" has now been completely exhausted:
- Q1 2016: 930,000 pigs exported for slaughter.
- Q1 2026: 100,000 pigs exported for slaughter.
With nearly all domestically raised pigs now staying within the country for processing, there is no longer a surplus to offset the shrinking local supply.
Operational outlook for 2026
The sector currently faces significant challenges regarding capacity utilization. While the national processing capacity stands at 300,000 pigs per week, current throughput during the high-demand early weeks of the year reached only 270,000 animals.
"The industry is entering a period of significant under-utilization," the report notes. As supply traditionally tightens during the summer months, Dutch facilities are expected to operate well below full load, raising concerns regarding the long-term economic sustainability of current processing infrastructure.
Despite the drop in volume, the decline in total pork production remains slightly less pronounced due to a slight increase in average animal weights.
